Privacy Policy & Affiliate Disclosure

This page explains what LongDistance.net collects when you visit, how that information is used, who else may set cookies through this site, and what rights you have. Together with our cookie policy and terms of use, it forms the legal basis of your relationship with this site.

What we collect directly

LongDistance.net does not require you to create an account, and we do not run forms that collect personal data. The only personal information we collect directly is what you choose to send us by email — for example, a question, a correction, or a partnership inquiry sent to one of the addresses on our contact page. We use that information only to reply to you and, where relevant, to update our articles.

What is collected automatically

Like most websites, this site receives standard server log information when you visit a page: your IP address, the page you requested, the page that referred you (if any), your browser and operating system, the date and time, and similar technical details. Server logs are kept for a limited period for security and diagnostic purposes.

Cookies and analytics

We use cookies and similar technologies to understand how the site is used and to display advertising. Our full breakdown of cookie categories, names, and how to control them lives in our cookie policy.

Specifically:

  • Google Analytics (via the gtag.js tag) helps us see which articles get read, where readers come from, and where the site has technical issues. The data is aggregated; we do not use it to identify individual readers.
  • Google AdSense and other advertising partners may set cookies to deliver ads, measure their performance, prevent fraud, and (where you've consented) personalize what you see.

Google AdSense disclosure

This site participates in advertising programs including Google AdSense. As required by Google, we disclose the following:

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site and other websites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ad Settings.
  • You may opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalized advertising by visiting www.aboutads.info/choices (US) or www.youronlinechoices.com (Europe).
  • For more on how Google uses information from sites or apps that use Google's services, see Google's partner-sites policy and Google's advertising technologies policy.

Third-party services we rely on

Beyond Google, this site may load assets, scripts, or tracking pixels from other third parties — for example, additional advertising networks and affiliate program providers. These third parties operate under their own privacy policies and may collect information about your visit (such as IP address, the page you viewed, and browser details). We do not control how those third parties handle data; please review their respective privacy notices for specifics.

Affiliate links

Some pages include affiliate links to retailers such as Amazon and Etsy. If you click an affiliate link and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. Affiliate links do not change what we recommend; where we don't recommend a product we tested, we say so on the page. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases.

Data retention

We retain emails you send us for as long as needed to respond and, where useful, to inform future article updates. Server logs are kept for a limited period. Analytics data retention follows Google Analytics' configured retention settings. Advertising cookie lifetimes vary by provider — see our cookie policy for more on this.

Your rights under GDPR (if you're in the EEA or UK)

If you are located in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the General Data Protection Regulation (and the UK GDPR) gives you specific rights over the personal data we hold about you. These include:

  • The right to access the personal data we hold about you.
  • The right to rectification if that data is inaccurate or incomplete.
  • The right to erasure ("right to be forgotten") in certain circumstances.
  • The right to restrict or object to certain processing, including direct marketing.
  • The right to data portability — to receive your data in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format.
  • The right to withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent.
  • The right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@longdistance.net.

Your rights under CCPA / CPRA (if you're in California)

California residents have specific rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, including:

  • The right to know what personal information we have collected about you, the sources of that information, and the purposes for which it is used.
  • The right to delete personal information, subject to certain exceptions.
  • The right to correct inaccurate personal information.
  • The right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
  • The right to limit the use of sensitive personal information.
  • The right to be free from discrimination for exercising these rights.

LongDistance.net does not sell personal information in the traditional sense. However, the use of cookies for personalized advertising may be considered "sharing" under CPRA. To opt out, use the Google Ad Settings and AboutAds.info links above, or contact privacy@longdistance.net.

International transfers

The third-party services we use (Google Analytics, AdSense, affiliate platforms) may transfer data internationally — including outside the EEA, UK, or your country of residence. Those providers handle international transfers under their own legal mechanisms (standard contractual clauses, adequacy decisions, etc.) which are described in their respective privacy policies.

Children's privacy

This site is intended for adults and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect any information we receive. No method of internet transmission or electronic storage is 100% secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy when our practices, the services we use, or applicable law change. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last reviewed on" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the site after we update this page means you accept the changes.
